Waterproofing children's shoes provides reliable protection against moisture, dirt and cold - and significantly extends the life of high-quality models. Regular waterproofing is particularly important for materials such as leather, textiles or GORE-TEX® in order to maintain breathability and protective function in the long term.

This guide shows how to waterproof different materials.

Which impregnation for which material?

  • Smooth leather: A waterproofing spray with a caring wax content protects and cares for the material. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources after treatment.
  • Textile: Water-based waterproofing sprays without solvents are particularly suitable. They reliably protect the fabric without impairing its breathability.
  • GORE-TEX® membrane materials: Breathable special products are essential here to maintain the waterproof function in the long term.
  • Suede and nubuck leather: These surfaces are particularly absorbent. It is best to apply the spray in thin layers and then gently brush the material.

Waterproofing kids' shoes - here's how

In order for the waterproofing agent to be fully effective, it is important to clean the shoes properly and allow them to dry completely. The waterproofing spray is applied evenly to the upper material from a distance of around 30 cm - ideally outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Then leave to dry thoroughly before using the shoes again.

Tip: Foam or wax impregnations without solvents are also suitable for sensitive materials.

Waterproofing without a spray - here's how

A good alternative to conventional waterproofing sprays is a waterproofing cream for dabbing on or a waterproofing foam. Allergy sufferers and people without a balcony or terrace particularly appreciate this alternative.

How often should kids' shoes be waterproofed?

Waterproofing is generally recommended every 4 to 6 weeks - or whenever the upper material absorbs moisture noticeably. More frequent application may be advisable, especially in the cooler months of the year or if the shoes are subject to heavy use.

Important note on waterproofing agents

Care and impregnating agents can change the look or feel of the outer material. It is therefore advisable to test the respective product on an inconspicuous area first before treating the entire shoe. The instructions for use on the packaging should also be read carefully before use in order to avoid changes to the material and to achieve the full effect.
